Breathe light into your still life with a more thoughtful approach. Combine vision and knowledge to paint extraordinary compositions. Learn how to think about painting “light” instead of objects.  Jeff’s thought process will be revealed through setting up a concept and executing it by going directly to paint in this four day workshop.

Over the course of his creative life, Jeff has developed an appreciation for the teaching process and the give-and-take relationship that he desires to create with students and emerging artists.  Through challenge and encouragement, he hopes to convey that good art is more than just mirroring a subject, but is also about capturing and interpreting a feeling or a mood, and to show that good paintings are built on principles, not formulas.  Legg believes, “The great artist has not reproduced nature, but has expressed by his extract, the most choice sensation it has made upon him” (Robert Henri-The Art Spirit).  Above all, he desires that those he teaches understand they can do more than they now realize and can eliminate fear from the painting process.

During this five day class, Jeff will demonstrate his approach to still life from the concept to set up and lighting and the progression to the finished work.  Through demonstrations and individual critique, he will emphasize the time tested principles including drawing, value, edges, color and interpreting light and shadow.  Painting from life will be emphasized and is at the core of Mr. Legg’s artistic sensibility.  Legg says, “Visualization and being truthful about the subject are inextricably linked and are at the heart of creativity.  A painting is a “translation” and can only become as great as the artist’s love and understanding of his subject.”

Daily demonstrations and commentary throughout the process will provide the opportunity to understand his paining methodology. There will be open discussion of material choices, prop selection, paint application, values, color palette and lighting. One on one critiques will be provided with special attention to individual needs.

This workshop will start at 9am each morning and finish at 4pm - with a 1 hour lunch break.

The main HQ location will be: Craven Hall, Sackville Street, Skipton, BD23 2PB, England.

Included in this workshop is 5 days tuition, all your lunches, easels, paper towels, gloves, two evening meals and the demonstration evening. This price also includes 20% VAT. Non-painting partners are welcome at no extra fee, though if they’d like food etc then there may be a small charge.

Needless to say, you can purchase many things from our HQ including the brushes Jeff uses, the paints, mineral spirits and more…just let us know well in advance. If you would like to borrow an easel, we can arrange that for you. However, if you do have your own pochade or travel easel, please bring it - and let us know.

We will send out a materials list 1 month before the workshop itself. We do this as things can change with the teachers required supplies and this way it saves any confusion or buying twice.

You will need to organise your own accommodation (we can help you!) and you will need to organise your own travel arrangements. If you are flying from outside of the UK, you should try and fly into either Manchester (if flying outside the EU) or into Leeds/Bradford Airport if within the EU. I can arrange for a taxi to pick you up (From Manchester, 1.5 hour is around £105 one way, from Leeds/Bradford, 45 minutes is around £55 one way). If you would like me to arrange these transfers, just ask. We have 8 rooms at our Rosemary & Co accommodation. This always sells first, and it is first-come, first served.

Full payment is needed for the accommodation. For prices, and to book a space onsite, please let me know after you have signed up. I will then put you in contact with Janine. You must sign up for the workshop before we can confirm any on-site accommodation queries. We recommend if you are flying long haul, you come in a couple of days earlier and stay a day or so later so you can rest and not feel rushed.

You can see all of our Terms and Conditions and the Code of Conduct here. Please familiarise yourself with this before signing up.
