WORKSHOPS IN YORKSHIRE - 5 DAY OUTDOOR - ‘PLEIN AIR’ LANDSCAPE PAINTING IN OIL

“FOCUS ON DESIGN”

Levels: Advanced-beginner to advanced-level painters (NB: you must be an experienced and a regular painter to fully benefit from this class)

Jill Carver will take her teaching of design ‘tools’ outdoors into the glorious Yorkshire landscape.

She will discuss techniques aimed to resolve and strengthen concepts, establish intention, and improve overall design. The aim is to help students advance their landscape painting beyond just the rendering of a ‘scene’. Students will realize that true creativity lies in the design decisions that we make; that the exploration of the ‘what if’s’ is where the fun is; and that adjusting design according to subject matter, and concept, will push them beyond just applying process.

Each day we will visit a different location to explore a specific design concept. We will be focusing on: division and placement armatures (beyond the usual 1/3rd grids etc.); the power of shape; notan; value management (tone); and colour management.

There will be demos and group discussion/brainstorming each day in the field, so that students feel confident exploring the structured task each day. These tools will aid students moving forward with either plein air or studio work.

Originally from London, England, Jill Carver moved to the United States in 2002. Before becoming a full time professional artist, she was a curatorial research assistant at the National Portrait Gallery in London for twelve years. Jill lives in Rico, Colorado, a small historical mining town nestled in the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado.

After establishing her name winning numerous Artists Choice awards at the country’s top plein events, such as Laguna Beach Invitational, Plein Air Easton, Sedona, San Luis Obispo and Telluride, she has participated in premier annual shows such as The Coors and The Bighorn Rendezvous. In 2014, Jill won the Gold Medal (Artists’ Choice) for Best in Show at Maynard Dixon Country and in the same year was inaugurated as Signature Member in ‘Plein Air Painters of America’. Her work is represented by The Medicine Man Gallery and The Insight Gallery. She is a popular and highly regarded teacher.

Skip Whitcomb: “Jill is making a powerful imprint on a whole generation of painters and opening eyes and minds to what western painting can be.”

Jill is thrilled to be returning to Yorkshire to teach and apply all the knowledge she has gained from painting professionally in the American South West for 22 years!

You will need to organise your own accommodation (we can help you!) and you will need to organise your own travel arrangements. If you are flying from outside of the UK, you should try and fly into either Manchester (if flying outside the EU) or into Leeds/Bradford Airport if within the EU. I can arrange for a taxi to pick you up (From Manchester, 1.5 hour is around £105 one way, from Leeds/Bradford, 45 minutes is around £55 one way). If you would like me to arrange these transfers, just ask. We have 8 rooms at our Rosemary & Co accommodation. This always sells first, and it is first-come, first served.

Full payment is needed for the accommodation. For prices, and to book a space onsite, please let me know after you have signed up. I will then put you in contact with Janine. You must sign up for the workshop before we can confirm any on-site accommodation queries. We recommend if you are flying long haul, you come in a couple of days earlier and stay a day or so later so you can rest and not feel rushed.

You can see all of our Terms and Conditions and the Code of Conduct here. Please familiarise yourself with this before signing up.
