Five-Day Painting Workshop

Michael Klein’s forthcoming five-day painting workshop is an immersive course that aims to explore a range of techniques and concepts central to his way of thinking, providing students with both a theoretical foundation and hands-on experience.

On the first day, participants will be introduced to the fundamental aspects of color theory. This will provide the backdrop for understanding the practical application of mixing colors. They will also delve into the intricacies of navigating color space on their palettes. The day will be filled with demonstrations using materials sourced from the garden, allowing for inspiration to occur that is directly connected to nature. Students will have the opportunity for continuous Q&A sessions throughout the day, ensuring no question goes unanswered.

Day two shifts the focus to the art of the block-in. Participants will learn the skill of breaking down the picture plane into two-dimensional shapes, exploring the distinction between painting in two-dimensional shapes versus the more subtle act of painting the form. The day will be filled with exercises, encouraging students to utilize any monochrome dry media, enhancing their grasp of the day's concepts.

The midpoint of the workshop, day three, invites students to dive into floral painting. The morning will be marked by a three-hour demonstration by Michael, offering students insights into capturing the essence of flowers. Key foundational principles, such as the creation of an underpainting using vibrant colors, will be explored. The afternoon promises to be equally engaging, allowing students to apply the morning’s information through guided learning on their own setups.

The fourth day continues deeper into the nuances of painting, focusing on detailing and exploring composition. The participants will continue to watch the demonstration as Michael works up specific areas in the painting, enriching our understanding of rendering form and the subtle art of manipulating paint. Everyone will also have opportunities to apply these learnings, refining their technique and enhancing their individual styles in the afternoon session.

The workshop concludes on day five, this final day is dedicated to "perfecting" the painting. Students will be introduced to techniques for rendering minute forms, as well as the concept of glazing to achieve the desired atmospheric effects. The day will not just be about techniques; there will also be in-depth discussions on various painting mediums, substrates, and materials used throughout the workshop demonstrations.

You will need to organise your own accommodation (we can help you!) and you will need to organise your own travel arrangements. If you are flying from outside of the UK, you should try and fly into either Manchester (if flying outside the EU) or into Leeds/Bradford Airport if within the EU. I can arrange for a taxi to pick you up (From Manchester, 1.5 hour is around £105 one way, from Leeds/Bradford, 45 minutes is around £55 one way). If you would like me to arrange these transfers, just ask. We have 8 rooms at our Rosemary & Co accommodation. This always sells first, and it is first-come, first served.

Full payment is needed for the accommodation. For prices, and to book a space onsite, please let me know after you have signed up. I will then put you in contact with Janine. You must sign up for the workshop before we can confirm any on-site accommodation queries. We recommend if you are flying long haul, you come in a couple of days earlier and stay a day or so later so you can rest and not feel rushed.

You can see all of our Terms and Conditions and the Code of Conduct here. Please familiarise yourself with this before signing up.
