We will send out a materials list 1 month before the workshop itself. We do this as things can change with the teachers required supplies and this way it saves any confusion or buying twice.

Five Day Portrait Workshop

All levels and mediums are welcome in Susan Lyon’s comprehensive 5-day study of painting and drawing a portrait in Yorkshire.

We will experiment with unique color combinations and a variety of toned surfaces to embark on an exploration of creative discovery beyond our usual habitual boundaries. Fear of failure or looking foolish are the enemy of growth and will be banished from this class! Failure is a necessary step to improvement and will be encouraged and celebrated in this quest to unleash the joy of our creative inner child.

Each day will build on the foundational concepts and tools of artistic perception explored in the previous day’s demonstration/lecture. By the end of the class, you will be armed with a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of drawing, value, color, edges, and technique—in order to more fully express your unique personal vision and to experiment with more confidence.

On the first day, Susan and Scott will demonstrate painting a portrait from the live model in the morning - discussing a step-by-step procedure for creating an accurate and artistic likeness, as well as the challenges of lighting and photographing a model. In the afternoon, the class along with Susan and Scott will do a professional photoshoot with the models. We will have two models so there will be 8 students to each model. All aspects of lighting and posing a model will be focused on and each student will choose photos they took to be printed out for them to work from the next days of the class. Susan will give individual instruction and guidance as you follow her procedure for accurately drawing/painting the model from life that afternoon. ( All you need to take photos is your phone or you can bring a digital camera, but if you prefer, you can use Susan or Scott’s reference images ).

On the second day, we will then paint from the photographs we took the day before. Susan will go around each student individually throughout the day to ensure guidance is given. We will print your references images out at the workshop. Throughout the week there will be demonstrations and one-on-one personal instruction, Susan will focus on analyzing the relative light and shadow patterns on the face in service of transforming a two-dimensional surface into the illusion of a living, breathing, three-dimensional portrait.

On the third day we will have two models back to join the class. We will paint live from the models for the day and again, take photos for reference material.

The fourth day we will work from our reference photos from the day before.

On the final day we will work from any photo of your choice. You can also use your own image if you’d like; bring plenty to choose from - or if you prefer to work on one from the week you could do that too. Susan and Scott will share some of their reference photographs too, if you prefer.

Students will go home with all the knowledge they need to hire models and work from their own personal images. We will also have a 3 hour Alla Prima demonstration from Susan and Scott. This will show you a different approach; start to finish of a portrait. We will record this and live stream it also. It will be from the live portrait. Exact date and times for this will be confirmed down the line.

More than anything, WE WILL put fun back into painting, experimenting, and creating!

You will need to organise your own accommodation (we can help you!) and you will need to organise your own travel arrangements. If you are flying from outside of the UK, you should try and fly into either Manchester (if flying outside the EU) or into Leeds/Bradford Airport if within the EU. I can arrange for a taxi to pick you up (From Manchester, 1.5 hour is around £105 one way, from Leeds/Bradford, 45 minutes is around £55 one way). If you would like me to arrange these transfers, just ask. We have 8 rooms at our Rosemary & Co accommodation. This always sells first, and it is first-come, first served.

Full payment is needed for the accommodation. For prices, and to book a space onsite, please let me know after you have signed up. I will then put you in contact with Janine. You must sign up for the workshop before we can confirm any on-site accommodation queries. We recommend if you are flying long haul, you come in a couple of days earlier and stay a day or so later so you can rest and not feel rushed.

You can see all of our Terms and Conditions and the Code of Conduct here. Please familiarise yourself with this before signing up.
