Ruth is well known for her narrative paintings. In this workshop, for the first time, she’ll be sharing her methods of creating a full-scale narrative portrait-in-landscape painting from start to finish.
This workshop will start at 9am each morning and finish at 4pm - with a 1 hour lunch break.
The location of this workshop will be: Craven Hall, Sackville Street, Skipton, BD23 2PB, England. This is a short drive from the Rosemary & Co Workshop.
Medium: Oil
Number of students: Maximum 16
Experience: All levels
Language: English
On the first morning, we will all head out to the Cow and Calf in Ilkley (a short 15 minute drive from the HQ) and meet our model. Ruth will then show you how to do a colour study and take photographs for your reference material. We will provide you with a ‘on the go’ pochade box, the same set up Ruth uses for this exercise. Our intention is to break down the barrier of photographing and getting colour studies of the model outdoors, for you to then use for the fuller painting in the studio. We will have a packed lunch on our way back to the HQ and then that afternoon go through our references and get them printed off to work from. More details will be explained in person for the first day, but just know if you do have your own pochade and want to bring it, feel free, if you don’t it really is not an issue. The second day we will work on the drawing, with a demonstration first from Ruth in the morning. Days three, four and five will be working on the fuller process, which Ruth will guide you through and give demonstrations too. You do not need a camera, but if you have one, bring it. If you’d prefer to use our reference images. Joe will be taking photos the first morning too and you’re welcome to use his shots instead. If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to reach out!
Included in this workshop is 5 days tuition, all your lunches, easels, paper towels, gloves and two evening meals. This price also includes 20% VAT. Non-painting partners are welcome to join us in the evenings at no extra fee, though if they’d like food etc then there may be a small charge.
Needless to say, you can purchase many things from our HQ including the brushes Ruth uses, lots of paints, gamsol/miracle medium/mediums, some panels, easels (new for 2025) and more…just let us know well in advance. If you would like to borrow an easel, we can arrange that for you. However, if you prefer to use your own pochade or travel easel, please bring it - and let us know.
We will send out a materials list 4-6 weeks before the workshop itself. We do this as things can change with the teachers required supplies and this way it saves any confusion or buying twice. Please be patient with this, as soon as it’s ready, we will send it over to you.

You will need to organise your own accommodation (we can help you!) and you will need to organise your own travel arrangements. If you are flying from outside of the UK, you should try and fly into either Manchester (if flying outside the EU) or into Leeds/Bradford Airport if within the EU. We can arrange for a taxi to pick you up (From Manchester, 1.5 hour is around £105 one way, from Leeds/Bradford, 45 minutes is around £55 one way). If you would like us to arrange these transfers, just ask. We have 8 rooms at our Rosemary & Co accommodations. This always sells first, and it is first-come, first served. Please do not arrange any travel or accommodation until you have signed up for the workshop itself.
Full payment is needed for the accommodation. For prices, and to book a space onsite, please let me know after you have signed up. I will then put you in contact with Janine. You must sign up for the workshop before we can confirm any on-site accommodation queries. We recommend if you are flying long haul, you come in a couple of days earlier and stay a day or so later so you can rest and not feel rushed.
You can see all of our Terms and Conditions and the Code of Conduct here. Please familiarise yourself with this before signing up.
