Jeffrey T. Larson (1962) was born in Two Harbors, MN and raised in the Minneapolis, MN area. Between 1980 and 1984, he studied under Richard Lack (1928-2009) at the prestigious Atelier Lack also located in Minneapolis. At this time the Atelier was one of the very few studio programs still existing in the world whose traditions and training methods reach back through Impressionism to the 18th-century French Academies. He deepened his knowledge in anatomical studies at the University of Minnesota, bronze casting and finishing at private foundries through years of personal studies in museums across both America and abroad.
Jeffrey and his wife, Heidi met when he was head instructor and assistant director (1984-1986) at Atelier LeSuere. Since then, he has painted professionally full-time.
In 1990, they bought and renovated an old school in northern Wisconsin near the shores of Lake Superior where they lived, worked and raised a family.
His work has won numerous first-place awards in both national and international fine art competitions, including: the Grand Draper Prize by the Portrait Society of America,
Art Renewal’s Center International Salon, and the Artist’s Magazine.
He has had over 20 one-man exhibitions in multiple galleries throughout the nation. He’s placed more than 750 works in private and public collections. In 2016, the Tweed Museum of Art exhibited his work with a 25 year retrospective.
In 2016 he and his wife purchased a historic old stone church in Duluth, MN and, along with their son Brock, renovated it and founded the Great Lakes Atelier of Fine Art, (GLAFA).In 2017, British filmmaker Joe Hawkins, in conjunction with East Oaks Studio, created an hour-long, Catalyst Award winning documentary featuring Jeffrey’s life and artistic journey. You can watch the documentary here.

5 Day Workshop - Painting the Still Life
“In this five day seminar we will go through the stages of how I approach still life painting with an emphasis and strong focus on how understanding the limitations of your paint is the secret to achieving powerful light effects. This is, by the way how the great Spanish painter Sorolla so beautifully captured light.
Through daily demonstrations and hands on painting we will together go through the step-by-step process that I use in approaching an alla prima painting. This will be an concise version of what I teach my 3rd year core students at GLAFA.
After four decades of painting professionally I’ve come to firmly believe that one only becomes a master painter by mastering the fundamentals. Two of the key elements that form the fundamental foundation is what I call the “Triad” and relational comparison, both of which we will explore in depth.
The instruction will be personal and hands on, I will work on each of your pieces throughout the process to demonstrate directly different aspects for you to see. My hope and goal for everyone is that they will leave with both a conceptual and practical experience that will allow for them to continue to develop beyond the week what all that they learned going forward in their own work.
I’m looking forward to meeting each and everyone of you and together getting down to the business of working hard together to make some solid progress in everyone's work.” Jeffrey T. Larson
We will have a maximum of 16 students for the workshop. The students will share 1 set up between 2. We will provide all still life set ups (we went shopping for a lot or antiques this year with Jeff and Heidi, but will head out again ahead of the workshop for more props!).
Usually in the mornings, Jeff will give a demonstration and then in the afternoons and into the evenings if you wish, you’ll be painting. Jeff will come around the class multiple times to give individual critique. The general running of the day will be Jeff’s decision. We trust everything Jeff does and know he will lead the group the best way he sees fit.
Each morning, we will kick off with fresh pastries, yogurts or fruit at HQ. We will have the coffee machine going (or tea if you prefer!). Lunches are provided and are prepared fresh each day. We pride ourselves on our food and look after all dietary requirements! Every evening we will having something exciting planned to do as a group. Non-painting partners and friends are welcome to join in all evening activities (for a small extra fee for food & drinks).
